KING Condo – The Total Fusion of Art and Architecture
The collaboration between renowned Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and developers Westbank and Allied is poised to manifest a truly groundbreaking urban living habitat that is more akin to a total work of art as opposed to just another typical "condo" project. For this particular development it is very important to suspend any previously held notions as to how architecture, design and community intertwine as these concepts are being totally reinvented by this truly monumental and historical project. New urban development in Toronto seems to tirelessly repeat the same limited range of forms which KING Condo is determined to break free from.
KING Condo draws inspiration from Habitat 67 which was commissioned for Expo 67 in Montreal and designed by architect Moshe Safdie. Habitat 67 was a ground-breaking experiment in compact urban living, designed to integrate the benefits of suburban homes –gardens, fresh air, privacy, lots of light and multi-levelled environments. By abandoning the typical tower-and-podium form, which creates a disconnect between public and private space, and through the use of interlocking modular residential units and elevated pedestrian corridors the project was the perfect benchmark for KING Condo.
The result from this inspiration is an urban mountain range in glass and greenery shaped by 4 peaks and valleys to maximize views and daylight, provide residential terraces and position the bulk of the building in 'pixel' like 45 degree cubes towards the south, away from King Street. An undulating landscape of terraces with trees and vines is created, fusing nature and the urban landscape effortlessly.
The bulk of the building is elevated from the ground to allow multiple passages to and through the courtyard, providing a unique retail and public experience. KING Condo is poised to become a vibrant space for retail, hospitality, workspace and cultural offerings. This year-round destination will feature restaurants and cafes, one-of-a-kind shops and services, art exhibits, street celebrations and craft & farmers markets.
The same "total work of art" philosophy that has guided Ingels and his team for the exterior is also applied to all interior spaces. The lobbies for each of the four mountains (North, East, West and South) draw from different design inspirations. Additionally, 80% of the homes within the project are unique.
B&B Italia, the world’s leading contemporary furniture company, has been chosen to carefully curate a collection of furniture packages that complement the modern industrial design aesthetic of the interior architecture. Studio and select one-bedroom units will come furnished by B&B Italia and residents of one, two and three-bedroom homes will have the option of purchasing furniture packages with their home at KING Condo. For the kitchen area Miele will provide a contemporary set of appliances for each suite.
To cap it off, the project will boast an incredible array of enviable amenities that will pamper its residents such as a spa, indoor and outdoor pool, hot tub, yoga and fitness studios, party and lounge rooms, and much more.
